Trip Facts

Mount Meru is Tanzania's second-highest mountain and one of East Africa's most rewarding trekking destinations. Located within Arusha National Park, Mount Meru offers a remarkable combination of mountain adventure, wildlife, dramatic volcanic scenery and panoramic views.

Unlike many mountain treks, the journey begins in an environment where wildlife can be encountered. As you make your way through the lower slopes, you may see animals such as giraffes, buffaloes, antelopes, baboons and monkeys. For your safety, an armed park ranger accompanies the trekking group, particularly because the trail passes through wildlife habitat.

One of Mount Meru's most spectacular features is its impressive horseshoe-shaped crater, formed when a significant section of the volcano was removed during a major geological event. As you climb higher, the landscape changes dramatically, taking you through several distinct vegetation zones, from dry forest and lush montane rainforest to moorland and finally the alpine environment near the summit.

The trek to Socialist Peak, at approximately 4,562 metres, is both physically challenging and deeply rewarding. From the summit, weather permitting, you can enjoy magnificent views of the surrounding landscape, the Meru crater and, in the distance, Mount Kilimanjaro. Mount Meru can be completed in 3 or 4 trekking days depending on the itinerary, pace and acclimatization requirements. Our recommended 4-day itinerary allows you to experience the mountain at a comfortable pace while enjoying its scenery, wildlife and unique volcanic landscape.

WHY CHOOSE MOUNT MERU?

  • A challenging but rewarding summit experience
  • Wildlife encounters within Arusha National Park
  • Dramatic views of the Meru crater and Ash Cone
  • Diverse vegetation and ecological zones
  • An optional acclimatization hike to Little Meru
  • Panoramic views towards Mount Kilimanjaro
  • An experienced mountain crew
  • The support and safety of an armed park ranger
  • A quieter and more intimate trekking experience than some of the busier Kilimanjaro routes

This combination makes Mount Meru an excellent choice for travellers seeking adventure, nature, wildlife and mountain scenery in one experience.
