Trip Facts

Mount Kilimanjaro is located in northern Tanzania and is one of the country's most iconic natural treasures. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and, at 5,895 metres (19,341 ft), is Africa's highest mountain and the world's highest free-standing mountain. The mountain is a volcanic massif comprising three main volcanic cones: Kibo, Mawenzi and Shira. Kibo is the highest point at 5,895 metres (19,341 ft), Mawenzi rises to 5,149 metres (16,896 ft), while Shira reaches approximately 3,962 metres (12,999 ft). Kibo and Mawenzi are dormant volcanoes, while Shira is extinct.

A trek to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro is challenging but deeply rewarding. Reaching Uhuru Peak, the Roof of Africa, offers breathtaking views, a powerful sense of achievement and the opportunity to experience several distinct ecological zones in a single journey.

Several established routes lead to the summit, each offering a different experience in terms of scenery, difficulty, duration, and acclimatisation. These include Machame, Lemosho, Marangu, Rongai and Umbwe, while the Northern Circuit provides a longer approach with additional acclimatization opportunities. Mweka is primarily used as a descent route for several southern and western approaches.

Along the way, trekkers experience Kilimanjaro's remarkable range of landscapes and climatic zones, from lush montane rainforest to heath and moorland, alpine desert and the high-altitude summit zone. Depending on the route and conditions, trekkers may also encounter wildlife such as colobus and blue monkeys, birds and other mountain species.

Kilimanjaro can be climbed throughout the year, although weather and trail conditions vary by season. We recommend selecting your climbing period and route carefully according to your preferences, fitness level, and acclimatization needs.

IMPORTANT NOTE

The number of trekking days indicated for each route does not include arrival and departure days unless specifically stated. For example, if the Marangu Route is planned as a 6-day trek, you should allow an additional day for arrival and an additional day for departure, making the overall Tanzania program 8 days.

Note: All climbs are conducted with an experienced mountain crew and in accordance with applicable Kilimanjaro National Park regulations. TANAPA requires climbers to trek with a licensed operator and emphasizes gradual ascent, hydration, and proper attention to altitude-related symptoms.

7-DAY MACHAME ROUTE

The Machame Route is one of the most popular and scenic approaches to Mount Kilimanjaro. Often known as the "Whiskey Route," it is more challenging than the Marangu Route, traditionally known as the "Coca-Cola Route." The route is particularly attractive because of its spectacular scenery and the variety of landscapes encountered along the way. Trekkers pass through rainforest, heath and moorland, the Shira Plateau, alpine desert, and finally the high-altitude summit zone.

The 7-day Machame itinerary provides a good opportunity for gradual acclimatization and allows trekkers to experience the mountain at a more manageable pace. The route begins at Machame Gate and approaches the summit from the southwest before crossing towards Lava Tower, Barranco, Karanga, and Barafu. The summit attempt begins from Barafu Camp, followed by descent through Mweka. Although physically demanding, the Machame Route rewards determined trekkers with remarkable scenery and a genuine sense of adventure. Proper preparation, appropriate equipment, hydration, and a slow, steady pace are essential.
